Who We Are

Organic Chianti Classico: A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

San Donatino is a winery located in the nuova frase tradotta renowned for its production of organic wine in Tuscany. Our vineyards extend three distinct areas, each with unique characteristics that help create wines of exceptional quality. This company structure is reminiscent of that of Burgundy, where the vineyards are located in different areas to make the most of the peculiarities of the terroir.

The soil

A Mosaic of Land and Climate

The three main areas of our vineyards are located on the medium hill, at an altitude of approximately 450 meters above sea level.

San Donatino is proud to produce an organic Chianti Classico, respecting the environment and enhancing the natural resources of our territory. Our winery adopts sustainable practices to guarantee high quality wines that respect nature. San Donatino Organic Chianti Classico is an authentic expression of our commitment to sustainability and Tuscan winemaking tradition.

Terroir

San Donatino

The first area is San Donatino, which directly surrounds the winery and is exposed to the south. Here, the vineyards enjoy excellent sun exposure, which favors the ripening of the grapes and gives the wines a complex and deep structure.

Poggio ai Mori

Poggio ai Mori is the hill adjacent to San Donatino, with an exposure that varies from south-east to north-west. This particular conformation, similar to a “donkey’s back“, allows the vineyards to develop on both slopes of the hill, offering breathtaking views of the Valdelsa. The soils here are part of the “Sillano Formation“, made up of marly sequences from around 100 million years ago, particularly suitable for the expression of Sangiovese. From these vineyards we produce some of our most important wines, such as Riserva, Chianti Classico, and Halley.

Campolungo

The third area is Campolungo, located in San Donato in Poggio, in the westernmost part of the Chianti Classico. Here too the vineyards have a variable exposure from south-east to north-west, but the soils are slightly different. This is a more recent limestone sequence, formed about 60 million years ago, with the presence of alberese, a common rock in the Chianti Classico. This area is significantly cooler, which is reflected in the degrees of ripeness of the grapes. From Campolungo we get lighter and fresher red wines, such as Campacci, as well as our white wines and rosé.

Terroir

Pedology and organic wine in Tuscany

Pedology plays a fundamental role in the quality of our wines. The clay-limestone soils of the “Sillano Formation” are ideal for Sangiovese, while the Alberese of Campolungo adds a unique freshness to our wines. The combination of different terroirs and our dedication to organic wine production in Tuscany allow us to create wines that reflect the diversity and richness of our territory.

San Donatino, with its vineyards spread across three unique areas, represents the essence of organic Chianti Classico. Every sip of our wines tells the story of the land from which it comes, offering an authentic and inimitable experience.
